THE OVERVIEW
Beijing’s scale demands selective planning. Imperial sites, hutong districts and contemporary institutions are widely separated, and security checks, traffic and long approaches make one or two substantial visits per day more realistic. Dongcheng brings together imperial sites, hutongs and many first-visit priorities, alongside security queues, long distances and limited vehicle access. Sanlitun and Chaoyang suit dining, contemporary culture and international hotels, although traffic and a commercial atmosphere shape the stay. Gulou and Shichahai offer historic lanes and evening walks, with uneven surfaces and visitor pressure. Qianmen combines central access with historic commercial streets and a substantially reconstructed streetscape. Haidian is useful for the Summer Palace, universities and gardens, but sits well beyond the historic centre.
